Could we finally be seeing the octagon return of BJ Penn? well it looks like if everything goes to plan then the fans in Phoenix, Arizona could witness the return of the former lightweight and welterweight champ.
The UFC announced this week that Penn will face Yair Rodriguez n a featherweight bout on January 15th, in Phoenix, Arizona.
2016 has definitely been the year of ‘will he won’t he’ for Penn, as a fight that was scheduled for UFC 199 against Cole Miller, was subsequently cancelled due to BJ failing a USADA out of competition test for using an IV, which under the new regulations has been banned.
Then mere weeks before the UFC returned to the Far East for their Manilla card, it was announced that BJ Penn had suffered an injury in training and couldn’t compete in his scheduled bout against Ricardo Lamas. Not only did this cause the UFC to lose their main event, in an unprecedented move, they also cancelled the whole card.
But could the Fight Night in January be third time lucky for Penn?
BJ hasn’t been seen in a UFC octagon since he lost to Frankie Edgar, but the 16-10-2 fighter seems determined to make a comeback. But he is straight into the fire from the frying pan with Rodriguez.
Rodriguez is currently 9-1 professionally, and has won his last 4 fights, with 3 of them gaining rewards. With 2 Fight of the Night awards (both split decision wins over Alex Caceres and Charles Rosa) and a Performance of the Night after his 2nd round KO of Andre Fili.
but the question will be, which BJ Penn will step into the octagon on January 15th? Will it be the Penn set the crowds alight with his technical prowess and dominance, or will it be the BJ Penn, who in their second fight was destroyed by Georges ST Pierre, causing his brother to throw in the towel, or will we ever actually see Penn step into a UFC octagon again.
