After a two-year retirement, the world got to witness the return of the undefeated Floyd “Money” Mayweather. With a 10th round TKO victory over the biggest name in MMA, Conor McGregor in the superfight of the ages at T-Mobile Arena. Even in defeat Conor McGregor was very much still apart of the equation.
Conor McGregor the 29 year old mixed martial artist, was making his boxing debut against the undefeated champion. Although in defeat Conor stayed very composed and collected in his boxing debut. The fight wasn’t what he expected as he predicted a first round knockout but instead gave Mayweather a worthy opponent taking the fight to the 10th round before Mayweather was able to figure out the rhythm of McGregor. When it comes to a future boxing career Conor McGregor was optimistic.
“He’s a lot better than I thought he was,” Mayweather said. “He used different angles. He was a tough competitor, but I was the better man tonight.
“We talked about how he’s a tough competitor, and I think we gave the fans what they wanted to see. I chose a hell of a dance partner to dance with. Conor McGregor, you are a hell of a champion.”
Mayweather then went on to announce his official retirement after the bout, and was very accurate in his prediction that fight would not last the entire 12 rounds. Even making the comment that he will stand in front of the Irishmen to look for a finish he accomplished.
Mayweather took his time in the opening rounds to give him the time to figure out his opponent’s rhythm. He began to put his strikes together to land against the hopeful Conor McGregor.
With plans to drain the stamina of McGregor, Mayweather began to attack the body in the middle rounds. Within the 7th round Conor began to really show his fatigue with his hands low and heavy breathing. We almost saw the fight end within the 9th round but Conor was lucky to make it through to the final bell after Mayweather landed strong strikes that rocked him.
“He’s a tough competitor” Mayweather said. “Our game plan was to take our time, let him shoot all his heavy shots early and then take him out at the end down the stretch.”
The 10th round belonged to Mayweather, pushing McGregor back with vicious right hands and clean combos it forced Robert Byrd, who was the third man in the ring to stop the fight with 1:05 remaining.
“I thought it was close. Let me go down, let the man put me down,” McGregor said about the finish. “Wobbly and fatigued? I’m clear-headed. Let me wobble back to me corner. If they finished that round he’d be wobbling to the morgue.
“You’ve got to put me out. No one is taking these kinds of risks.”
Mayweather landing more strikes over McGregor, 170 to 111, according to CompuBox, and landed 58 percent of his strong strikes. From Rounds 6-10, Mayweather out-struck his opponent by a count of 130-60.
At the time of the stoppage, Mayweather led on all three judges’ scorecards (87-83, 89-82, 89-81).
You couldn’t count the Irishmen out even after he began to slow and lose his power, He stayed in the fight until the end. Landing strikes in the clinch, and slipping certain strikes to answer them when he could.
With several warning to strikes to the back of the head from McGregor, Byrd allowed both competitors to work in the clinch. Giving fair warning to both men no points were ever taken from either competitor.
With the world wondering how Conor McGregor would hold up in the boxing ring, he stayed very close to the boxing rules, showing great technique. He was a formal opponent to one of the greatest boxers in the world and kept the competitive.
“I thought I took the early rounds pretty easy,” McGregor said. “He’s composed. He’s not that fast, he’s not that powerful, but boy, is he composed.
“I turned [Mayweather] into a Mexican tonight. He fought like a Mexican.”
“This was my last fight tonight. For sure. Tonight was my last fight.”
